Elemental

 13in x 11in x 22in 2022

This sculpture is a reflection of Earth’s people, colonization, and missing history. Elemental is made up of 3 different bodies of clay in the links of the chain and the face, most of the body is made using Obsidian clay, dark like soil of the Earth. Yet the Earth is not free, in shackles and some of the portraits on the body of the piece are no longer recognizable to human history. Imagery taken from the sunken temple at the sacred mountain huacas, Quinisachata range in Tiahuanco (Tiwanaku) in South America believed to be a mountain of human origins and emergence. Horns adorn the head of the Elemental which is a natural or wild trait that can be perceived as evil. A feathered serpent looks over her shoulder from behind symbolizing ancestral guidance. The serpent scales mimicked in the body and double as a chain link fence surface, another oppressive or containing force. The Elemental’s face is half light and half dark, with a yin and yang dot to balance the portrait. They represent artists as clown, jester or entertainment yet judged for its absurdity and questioned for our offering to society.  Both good and evil are humans. The heart colonized, a roman cathedral window cut out, an ancient spirit within longing to be free yet also in chains. This piece symbolizes a deep knowing of our soul’s history, of our people's history beyond human understanding and our position here on the planet being to rediscover this truth for ourselves. Despite the oppressive forces on the inside we are true and free and beauty is within. Beauty is truth and intuition.
